Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez is one of Disney’s top chicks at the moment, and why wouldn’t she be? Her Disney Channel show, “Wizards of Waverly Place”, won an Emmy for best children’s television show. Selena was no stranger to acting, being on the PBS show “Barney and Friends”, for two seasons. Selena was in the 2008 film “Spy Kids 3-D Game over” and contributed her voice to “Horton Hears a Who”.
I saw the preview for Selena’s upcoming film, “Ramona and Beezus”, and have to say it looks pretty good. The surprising thing about “Ramona and Beezus” is it is a 20th Century Fox production. (I’m not sure how contracts work anymore) Selena doesn’t seem to be looking for a breakout role, or to gain a more adult fan base. It seems, from her website that she wants to focus more on making music, and continuing to “inspire.”
Without a world tour or a huge music fan base to back her at the moment, acting is looking more promising to me, (although her song “naturally”, on pop charts now, does make you want to dance). It will be interesting to see where life takes Selena Gomez. At the age of 17 she has already had her foot in so many doors, and doesn’t appear to be stopping anytime soon.
The question is how many Disney stars can be successful in both acting and singing? So many actors have tried their hand at singing and failed, but it seems as though in recent years Disney, in particular, has created a line of people talented at both singing and acting. Is the singer/actor going to become a stable fixture in the television and movie scene or will it fade as quickly as the boy band? Selena gives off the vibe that acting is her career, music is her passion, and however, does this mean we are breeding a generation of actors and actresses not fully passionate about their craft? Time will tell as these stars grow and make decisions. Selena Gomez is a star to watch.
