A week doesn’t go by without Miley Cyrus stirring up controversy, but the latest incident illustrates that in Hollywood you really can’t have “The Best of Both Worlds.” A “friend” of Miley videotaped her at a party smoking. The most disappointing part of this to the Cyrus family is that Ronald, "Pappy" Cyrus died of lung cancer, which prompted Miley to say on numerous occasions that she vowed not to smoke.
The video was actually pretty comical. I think what is most surprising to everyone is not the act of smoking, but rather the unexpected empty behavior from the teen starlet. Cyrus has inspired millions of boys, girls, and adults worldwide with her music, acting, and just being who she is. Cyrus’ work with numerous charities, and encouraging messages through her bestselling biography, tweets, and blog posts has clearly shaped the way many youth view the world. It would be an absolute shame for all the good she has given this world to be undone through some rough times and rebellious behavior. The content of this video is clear, and there is no excuse. The blame solely reflects back on Cyrus herself, which makes this a nightmare for her PR people, because there's no talking her way out of it.
Hollywood is very unforgiving. Britney Spears made a comeback and her fans are loyal, however, her meltdown is never far from memory. For teen fans, in particular it becomes difficult defending their favorite star, when their friends begin to scrutinize them for the controversial behavior of their idol. Miley has said herself, “I’m not here to babysit your kids.” It is unlikely that an increase in salvia smoking will result from this controversy, but this whole ordeal is another example of the way in which we often perceive superstars as superhuman. Although nothing illegal happened in the bong incident, it’s not exactly flattering. Miley once wrote in light of another controversy, “I know everything is a part of GOD's ultimate plan, and mistakes happen so that eventually I will become the woman he aspires me to be." Let’s hope Miley perceives this as a mistake and the entertainment news world can move on.
