A "Black" Friday In Music

Rebecca Black is being called the next Justin Bieber. There’s just one problem. Justin Bieber can actually sing. The people responsible for Rebecca Black’s fame are the Los Angeles based Ark Music Factory, or maybe her viral video can be credited to Daniel Tosh. Since the video was featured on Tosh.0, it has reached almost 10 million views.
The mission of Ark is to “…make it possible for emerging independent artists from a variety of popular genres to be discovered, defined and delivered, to advance in their chosen career and be successful…” There is much speculation going on as to the integrity of the company, some stating that its targeting young girls who want to be stars, making them pay thousands for their videos to go viral, and get “signed.” If you take one listen to Black’s song, “Friday,” you wonder if it’s even music. The overly generic, poorly auto-tuned jam is a yawn, even if you are13! The comments made by kids on the video are sarcastic, “can you sign me too?” and “OMG these lyrics are deep!” The Teen Blog section of the site featured pictures of Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, who have nothing to do with the label. I’m sure we will be hearing more about Rebecca Black and Ark Music Factory in the coming weeks, as a visit to their website revealed the background image had been removed due to copyright infringement.
