The Burbank International Film Festival wrapped up a fantastic weekend in downtown Burbank, honoring some of the finest in independent film. Appearances by Ed Asner, and Mark Rydell, who starred in the short Good Men, added an extra special celebrity flair to the festivities. Honorees at this year’s event included Mark Kirkland (The Simpsons), Bill Plympton (Plymptoons), Fred Willard (who recently appeared in the Emmy winning Modern Family), and Lisa Nova. Al Jean, executive producer of The Simpsons, received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Television Animation.
Highlights of Sunday’s awards gala included the stylings of the hilarious Brett Walkow (A Guy Walks Into a Bar web series). Big Winners were:
Best Picture- A Lonely Place for Dying
Best Documentary- Canine Instinct
Best Short- Bathing and the Lonely Girl
Best Editing- Help Me Please!
Best Actress- Emma Karwandy (Death Wish).

Student films gave credit to their respective institutions with Dr. Thompson, winning Best Student Film from New York Film Academy, and An Awkward Situation, winning Best Student Animation from Santa Monica College.
A great moment of the night was when Best Picture was announced and Director Justin Eugene Evans wasn't present to accept his award for A Lonely Place For Dying. Brent Walkow noted "At least the director didn't die in a lonely place."
The 2011 Burbank International Film Festival attracted some of the finest independent filmmakers from all over the world, with support from some of the industry's leaders.
