Fame In the Digital Age

I'm not going to lie.. I joined Twitter because Ryan Seacrest talked about it on his radio show that I listen to religiously. I thought the concept of celebrities interacting on a closer level with their fans was way cool, but I feel bad for the celebrities who open their replies to hate messages, or spam. There has been an abundance of articles about celebrities urging kids to stay away from the Internet. Let's face it, if we didn't have the Internet, you wouldn't be reading this right now. The "digital age" is opening doors for people into the entertainment industry that have never been opened before. The idea is that these new levels of exposure not be abused.

George Clooney said, "I would rather have a prostate exam on live television by a guy with very cold hands than have a Facebook page". In February 2010, in a tabloid tell all, John Mayer claimed that Jennifer Aniston was jealous of his fame due to the fact that she became famous before social networking. (Hate to break it to you John but your music is much better than your tweets). Many of today's stars were discovered on the internet including Justin Beiber and Colbie Callait. Even the Jonas Brothers got a boost to their career through their MySpace page. Should we listen to George Clooney, and get off Facebook? And is Miley Cyrus really on an anti-internet campaign? There has to be a balance between the use of social networking to get your name out, and good old fashioned hard work.  No matter how you look at it not everyone can be "discovered." Today's digital stars should give George Clooney some love for sweating through auditions. Maybe by 2011 we will stop blaming Liam Hemsworth for Miley's twitter deletion. If nothing else text more, tweet less, and watch a movie on the big screen. Maybe George is jealous that Leo just looks that much better in iMax...
